156 Gallium Nitride (GaN): Physics, Devices, and Technology
5.3.2 x-BAnd frequency MMics
5.3.2.1 State-of-the-Art
X-band frequencies between 8 and 12 GHz provide one of the main applications
for which high-power GaN amplier MMICs are developed. This main applica-
tion yields transmitters for solid-state active-electronically steered aperture (AESA)
radars. This is mainly due to the inability of GaAs MMICs of the same type to
provide efciently output power levels beyond 10 W per IC, as the power combin-
ing [70] has a great impact on the MMIC and resulting system efciency for mobile
radar. Further, the TR-module architecture can be simplied with a reduction of less
MMICs per module, and the module size can be potentially reduced in the vie ...
