Abstract

Indonesia, having a population of 254 million, is the fifth most populous country in the world, and it is the largest country comprised solely of islands, over 17,500 of them. It is strategically located amid sea lanes between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The island arc of the Indonesian archipelago was raised by subduction of the Indian-Australian plate diving beneath the Eurasian plate. The presence of the nearby Philippine and Pacific plates creates a very active tectonic region. There are more volcanoes in Indonesia than any other country, with major volcanic activity on six islands including Sumatra, Java, and Sulawesi.
