Abstract

The East Mesa geothermal field lies roughly 17 miles east of Heber in California’s Imperial Valley, and, like the Heber field, is a “hidden” geothermal resource, lacking any surface thermal manifestations. Interest in the area began in 1968, and exploration and tests were conducted in the 1970s that paved the way for the power plants that would be built in the coming years. The Magamamax binary power plant came online in 1979, and the features and technical details of the design are discussed within the chapter.
