Setting up the WinPE environment

The Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) includes a batch file that creates an environment for working with WinPE images. This batch file requires two arguments. The first one is the architecture type of the target image, and since Nano Server is 64-bit, we will use amd64. The second argument is, the working folder. In our example, the location for the WinPE folder is d:\TempPE\.

  1. In the Deployment and Tools CMD session, change directories to C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment\.
  2. Run the copype.cmd file with the appropriate arguments as the following:
copype.cmd amd64 d:\TempPE\
