When the topic of searching comes up, it is often followed by an interest in querying the underlying database tables directly, bypassing the CE server. The CM team discourages that idea because there are many useful abstractions and additional capabilities in the CE layer. Not the least of these abstractions is security access checks; those are completely bypassed if the CE is bypassed. Still, the feeling is that it's your data so you should be able to read it. You should not do it unless you have a strong reason. On the other hand, the CM team does not support any updates done directly to rows and columns of the underlying database. Only updates done by the CE are supported.
