PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

The aim of this section is to help the Watchkeeper make the right choices – every second counts.

Night time. Another uneventful watch on a long trip. The Navigator paces the bridge, while he thinks about home and looks forward to a shower and a good sleep.

Visibility has been poor all night, only about 2 miles due to a thick bank of fog, and the Navigator suddenly realises the fog has closed right in and he can only just make out the for'ard mast.

Going over to the radar he sees it has been left on the 4 mile range. Switching to 12 mile range he sees a target closing at 5 miles.

What now?

There is a full range of GMDSS equipment on board.
