Goals and Goal Setting
Task 3: Develop Goals
Identifying opportunities (Task 1), and creating S.M.A.R.T. goal statements (Task
2) are two essential elements needed to complete Task 3, goal development.
Goal development expands goal statements to provide context and substance for
expected results and benefits. Completion of Task 1 (identify opportunities for
goals) and Task 2 (write goal statements) may result in one, two, 10, or 50 legiti-
mate goal statements that will require development before work toward goal
achievement can begin.
You should complete goal development for every legitimate goal statement
created. There are six steps to effective goal development:
1. Classify goals by type
2. Prioritize within each type
3. Establish standards for performance
