The value of things

I’M NOT SURE exactly how old I was when I first became aware of money and the value of things, but the general notion of material wealth must have made an impression on me at some point.

I knew our house in Basingstoke was better than our accommodation in London. Not only did I have my own bed, I also had my own room; it was a far cry from living over the pub or squeezing into my nan’s house. But I don’t think I compared it to, say, a six-bedroom electric-gated mansion up the road. I probably wasn’t even aware that bigger houses existed. If I had been, I’m sure I wouldn’t have cared. As far as I was concerned, we had everything we needed. We were doing okay. I didn’t covet anything.
