Outposts, Forts, and Castles

When particular countries’ armies are expanding and taking land from other countries, it is useful to create outposts or bases for defense to protect the soldiers from attack. Leaving yourself without a way to defend against a local force would be very dangerous and could lead to large losses and defeat.

Roman armies were highly adept at creating defensive positions when marching in foreign lands. They created forts to protect them from attack. For makeshift bases, these forts were sometimes quite elaborate and impressive.
