For more than a decade, I’ve been speaking about purpose with audiences around the world—colleges, corporations, nonprofits, government entities, and collections of friends. And I often like to begin my talks by asking the audience a simple question: Who is someone in your life who is flourishing?
The answers are beautiful, heartfelt, and encouraging. One by one, audience members raise their hands and tell stories of the people they admire in their lives. One woman told me of a grandmother who had lost her husband but who remained an encouragement to all around her. She maintained a garden at her home, going outside each day to cultivate beauty and grow plants she could eat and serve to those she loved. ...
