Yvon Chouinard was born in Lewiston, Maine, in 1938. His father was a handyman, plumber, and mechanic who transplanted the family to Southern California when Yvon was nine years old. Yvon started rock climbing in 1953 as a fourteen-year-old member of the Southern California Falconry Club. A club leader, Don Prentice, taught the boys how to rappel down the cliffs to the falcon aeries.1 Chouinard was hooked, eventually becoming a leading figure in the golden age of Yosemite climbing.
