Just as my siblings and I have our own memories of our father’s abandonment, we have our own take on how its aftermath affected our lives.
Joe cried the day our father left, but he never cried for him again. He looks back and sees a fourteen-year-old boy who suddenly had to be responsible for himself. So he focused on doing the best he could at the tasks in front of him, like staying up until 3 a.m. to finish homework, and excelling at varsity sports. Joe believed that the worst person he could let down was himself. His tenacity was compounded by his competitive spirit and natural analytic abilities.
