Google Apps as an ID provider with OpenID

Introduction to OpenID

In the previous sections, a Google Apps domain played the Service Provider role. It is thus dependent on an external authentication process taken care of by an IdP. Conversely, it is also possible to let a Google Apps domain play the role of an ID provider. This is the topic of this last section. The protocol used is, in this case, OpenID.

OpenID is an authentication protocol, not a standard like SAML. It does not rely on any central directory to work. This is in contrast with Shibboleth's implementation of SAML, which federates identities using a central enterprise directory.
