IT Operations in the Cloud

Building and managing infrastructure in the cloud versus on-premises has implications for how teams are structured and how they operate. This, in turn, has led to the rise of roles and concepts such as developer operations (DevOps) and site reliability engineering (SRE). Before we dig into these concepts in this chapter, we’ll highlight the main differences between operating cloud environments relative to on-premises.

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to do the following:

  • Describe the differences between cloud and self-hosted infrastructure
  • Understand DevOps and SRE and how they apply to businesses

This chapter covers the following topics:

  • Service availability – on-premises versus cloud
  • Overview
