Facebook and Twitter


This chapter discusses the rise of the major social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and shows how libraries of all kinds are using these to tremendous effect. It also introduces some of the newer services such as Tumblr and FourSquare. It shows how major libraries such as the British Library and the New York Public Library became early and enthusiastic adopters of social media, and how they overcame opposition to prove that this was a legitimate way of promoting the institutional mission. It also presents a case study of a small public library in Ohio that made Facebook an integral part of its operation.
