Musée du Louvre, one of France’s national trea-
sures, is one of the largest buildings in Europe
and the most visited museum in the world.
It is located on the Seine’s Right Bank in
Paris, housed in the Palais du Louvre, which
began as a fortress built in the late twelfth
century under Philip II and covers an area of
652,300 square feet (60,600 sq m). The mu-
seum opened in 1793 and is comprised of the
Sully Wing to the east, the Richelieu Wing to the
