During the 1940s and 1950s, Las Vegas’s
Fremont Street (see page 120) was considered
the city’s center of fantasy, licentiousness,
and gambling. However, as casinos toward the
south end of the Strip grew larger and more
extravagant in the 1980s, downtown Las Vegas,
including Fremont Street, started to fade. In
1992, downtown casino owners joined with the
City of Las Vegas to develop an ambitious plan
for saving this landmark area.
