Georges Claude (1870–1960) was a French
engineer known for the invention and com-
mercialization of neon tube lighting. Neon tube
lighting is created by a chemical reaction or
electrical glow discharge that occurs between
an electrode and neon or other gases contained
within brightly glowing glass tubing or bulbs.
For example, neon gas produces an intense red,
while argon gas produces a grayish blue. By
coating the interior surface of the glass tube, an
expanded range of colors can be achieved.
