Lazar Markovich Lissitzky (1890–1941), better
known as El Lissitzky, was a Russian artist,
graphic designer, photographer, typographer,
educator, and architect involved in the Russian
avant-garde movement of the 1920s. His work
greatly influenced the Bauhaus (1919; see page
75) and constructivist movements, as well as
the development of twentieth-century architec-
ture and graphic design.
