Gerrit Rietveld (1888–1964) was one of the first
architects and designers to break with the past
design traditions of the English Arts and Crafts
style and late-nineteenth-century rational-
ism. He was a pioneer of the avant-garde de
Stijl movement and introduced the world to a
new form of architecture composed of colored
spatial planes in space.
