Herbert Bayer (1900–1985), a pioneering
graphic designer, typographer, architect, painter,
photographer, and educator, was born in the
mountainous region of Haag, near Salzburg.
After completing his military service, he began
his career as an architect’s apprentice on a
wide variety of commissions, including interiors,
furniture, and packaging.
In 1921, Bayer enrolled as a student at the
Bauhaus (1919; see page 75) in Weimar, where
he studied under artist and theorist Wassily
Kandinsky (1866–1944) and later under legend-
ary photographer Laszlo Moholy-Nagy ...
