Theo van Doesburg (1883–1931) is best known
as one of the founders and leaders of the de
Stijl art movement. Born Christian Emil Marie
Küpper in Utrecht, Netherlands, in 1883, he was
a self-educated Dutch artist and architect, prac-
ticing painting, writing, poetry, and architecture.
In the early 1910s, he became increasingly
influenced by the work of architects, artists, and
