Paul Renner (1878–1956) was a German typo-
grapher, graphic designer, author, and teacher
best known as the designer of the sans-serif
typeface Futura (1927), a groundbreaking land-
mark of modernist typographic design still
popular today.
During the 1920s and 1930s, he was a
prominent member of the Deutscher Werkbund
(German Work Federation) while creating his
first book designs for various Munich-based
publishers. As an author, he fashioned a new
set of guidelines for balanced book design in his
