The French Building, located on the
northeast corner of Fifth Avenue and East 45th
Street, was a namesake commercial office
building built by the New York City real estate
developer Fred Fillmore French (1883–1936).
It was completed in 1927 with a striking and
gleaming art deco facade that contributed
significantly to the international reputation and
renown of Fifth Avenue.
The building’s arched gateway entrance is
richly decorated with bas-relief bronze figura-
tive motifs of flying horses, reclining figures,
