The years between the great world wars are remembered as a time
of turmoil and recovery throughout the world. Following the end of
World War I in 1918, the civilized world fell into an economic, politi-
cal, and social downfall caused by the Great Depression.
Fascism, a radical authoritarian nationalist movement, grew
out of post–World War I anxiety, accelerated and gained momen-
tum in Italy, Germany, and Spain during the 1920s and 1930s. This
time period was also marked by radical changes in the international
order of world prominence and power. New countries and ideologies
were formed; old ones were abolished, with every nation wanting to
make its mark on the new world order.
