One of the most familiar and recognizable
symbols in American popular culture during
the 1950s was the iconic orange roofs, blue
cupolas, white weathervanes, and characteristic
typography of the Howard Johnson chain of
roadside restaurants and motels.
The name is derived from the company’s
founder, Howard Deering Johnson (1897–1972),
an innovative entrepreneur and creator of the
first franchise, who started the initial chain of
