Born in 1917, Richard “Jock” Kinneir (1917–
1994) was a British typographer and graphic
designer who, with his colleague Margaret Cal-
vert (b. 1936), were the first graphic designers,
rather than civic engineers or road surveyors,
to design cohesive national graphic systems for
roadway and railway signs that are still used
today throughout the United Kingdom.
