Alexander Girard (1907–1993) is considered to
be one of the most innovative and expressive
designers of the twentieth century. Born in 1907
in New York City and raised in Italy, he studied
at the Royal Institute of British Architects in
London and then at the Royal School of Archi-
tecture in Rome. In 1932, he returned to New
York City and opened his first architecture and
interior design office.
By 1937, Girard moved to Detroit, where he
