IMAGERY IS, PERHAPS, the heart of visual communication.
Although text usually supports designed messages, symbols,
icons, photographs, and illustrations speak to audiences with
the greatest impact. Photography offers depth and credibility
that commands an audience’s attention on fi rst glance, while
illustration customizes communication and adds a human ele-
ment. For quick hits of information, or where a harder-edged,
contemporary feel is needed, try icons and abstract graphic
languages.
Texture and pattern add detail and depth to the simplest of
layouts. Many of the individual components in this section may
be easily altered (e.g., enlarging the scale of a pattern to create
larger graphic elements, or housing an icon within a shape) or
combined for greater visual variety. The designer who is well
versed in the distinct qualities of the pictorial resources at his or
her fi ngertips can experiment with their use to create dynamic
and inventive visual communications.

their tremendous graphic power, whether used
