TYPOGRAPHY IS A DYNAMIC, universal element critical to the
success of any design project. The texture of letters and words,
sentences and paragraphs, bold headlines and callouts—from
the most delicate script to the heaviest slab serif—can be manip-
ulated into expressive confi gurations that make reading easier
and transform text into image. Choosing the best fonts to com-
bine for any project is an exercise in textural contrast, weight,
scale, and visual impact. The designer who appreciates the
subtleties among serifs and sans will be able to create a successful
architecture for any typographic page, no matter how complex.
A full library of typeface combinations is available here, along
with all the elements a designer needs to enhance the typograph-
ic page: titling and subtitling confi gurations; ideas for text entry
points, drop caps, and paragraph separators; an array of options
for text shapes, pull quotes, lists, and captions; and last but not
least, a selection of typographic embellishments, dingbats, and
decorative details.

Letters and words may be transformed into
compelling images through any number
of alterations, from simple texturizing to
distorting, splicing, and deconstructing.
Such manipulations may serve a purely
visual function
helping to integrate the
typographic form with other pictorial matter
by creating parity in form
and they may also
work toward evoking concepts, supporting
the meaning of the words through the method
of manipulation. Shown here is a compendium
of the nearly limitless possibilities for typo-
graphic expression.
