THE HEART OF THE MATTER
PROJECT STRATEGIES
A series of promotional tote bags for a fairy-tale festival supports
a family of black-and-white creature illustrations with a rainbow of
vivid hues. A contemporary serif, used for the type elements, visu-
ally relates to the thins and thicks in the drawings.

Wraparound labels of abstracted, dot-patterned
photographs bring energy and a contemporary edge
to this packaging system for a line of toiletries. The
choice of a classical serif brings detail and organicism
to the otherwise hard-edged presentation.

Electric hues and sharply styl-
ized illustrations of insect pests
convey the potency of these
repellent sprays. Consistency
among illustrative treatments,
type styles and arrangement,
positioning of the primary
insect subject relative to the
titling and background areas,
and secondary hue identities
provides immediate product
family recognizability.

The immediacy and variability
of narrative inherent in public
storytelling announce them-
selves in this vibrant packaging
system for a set of archive CDs
produced by a storytelling
organization. A family of vivid
primary hues underpins the
packages; each cover’s layout
combines several elements
whose subjects change from
CD to CD, but whose visual
treatments remain consistent.
Formal attributes from within
the images inform the selection
of type styles to help unify the
visual language.

For a funky, sophisticated cosmetics
line, the designer evokes the energy
and architecture of an urban environ-
ment with a variety of geometric
patterns. A two-level palette brands
the overall line and color codes
products for day or evening. Added
drama and contrast are supplied by
the mix of typefaces: a sleek sans
serif family and a chunky slab serif.

A painterly composition of the continents on the
cover of this CD, “Beats on Canvas,” metaphorically
links art making and drumming. Inside the case,
a grid of paint daubs, an inscription on the reverse
of a stretched canvas, and an array of paint-covered
brushes (arranged to evoke long, vertical drips)
continue the metaphor. The CD surface itself sug-
gests a “paint-by-numbers” idea.
