Summary

Both applets and applications are executed by the Java interpreter. Applications must create their own frame, whereas applets run in the frame provided by the Java-enabled web browser or appletviewer. As a result, applications must handle window closing events, whereas while an applet's execution is controlled by the browser or appletviewer. Applications are free to read and write files, but untrusted applets are not permitted to do so.
