In many of my classes I use a special exercise to give people the direct experience of creating and, hopefully, later delivering a profound acknowledgment to someone in their professional career. If they want to go back to their first boss or mentor, that is fine. If they want to acknowledge someone currently reporting to them at that moment, that is also fine. Whatever resonates with them and allows them to dip down deep into that vulnerable place in themselves, where true, heartfelt acknowledgments live, is great.
