ONE OF OUR clients, Patrick, had his first interview with a vice president for the company he applied to at a local restaurant. Patrick arrived early and spent some time doing last-minute prepping while drinking a coffee outside a bookstore. He entered the restaurant five minutes early and waited, and then the vice president, Lisa, walked in about two or three minutes late.

They exchanged pleasantries about the weather and finding the restaurant. The hostess seated them. Then Lisa said, “I love that suit. That is a very sharp outfit.” Patrick knew right then that he was in.
