The sun beat down on the gravel walkways and open grass spaces flanking the long, broad river where the hydroplanes raced. I’d been invited to the Water Follies, a premier hydroplane race and community festival in eastern Washington State by a friend, but I hadn’t been prepared for the 95 degree weather, no shade, and races that lasted only a few minutes with hour-long intervals between them.
