CHAPTER 7Great Pajama Job Interviews

I interviewed for a full-time remote position recently. Yep. I know. Why would I give up running my own business? But a friend had urged me to give it a whirl, arguing that it was a position I would thrive in and the money and benefits were superb. And so I did. I sent off my résumé and cover letter and forgot about it.

True story. It went like this:

Hi Kerry,

Thank you for your interest in opportunities at our company! I received your resume in regards to a position and would like to schedule you for a 30 min Zoom video conference interview with someone from the team. Can you let me know a few dates/times you're available?

Congratulations on moving forward in the process!

She then sent me an email with the name of whom I would be speaking with and the link to the video conference on Zoom.

I tested it out. It allowed me to see if my computer was in the right position (propped up on a few books so the camera was at eye level), what my background looked like, and if I had anything stuck in my teeth. I do a lot of podcasts and video interviews, so I was pretty comfortable with all the stage-setting.

Nonetheless, once the interview started, there were glitches. My interviewer's internet connection was weak and the screen froze twice. I continued chatting away, only to have to repeat it all once she disconnected and logged back in. Exasperating. Finally, I suggested ...
