We produced this book because we believe that industrial-organizational (I-O) psychology has tremendous opportunity—even an obligation—to reinforce and encourage responsible behaviors in and by organizations. It is unlikely that any individual, or any collective of individuals comprising an organization’s decision makers, sets out with the goal of damaging the environment or making the world a worse place. However, the exigencies of business may lead to failure to think through the consequences of actions, or the belief that the benefits (e.g., profit) outweigh presumed costs of engaging in environmental sustainability.
