Abstract

Deposits of soft clays are commonly found in coastal and alluvial areas. These clays are generally very plastic and normally consolidated. Electrokinetic consolidation, using the principles of electro-osmosis, is a soil improvement technique that has been used for treatment of fine-grained soils such as silts and clays. The emergence of electrically conductive polymers has enabled the coupling of the prefabricated vertical drains technology with the electro-osmotic consolidation principles, resulting in the development of an efficient electrode known as the electric vertical drain (EVD).
