BRASSICAS

Vegetables in this group are all sown at roughly the same time using the same method. The lush green growth needs rich soil, so make sure you incorporate plenty of compost or well-rotted manure before you transplant seedlings.

Start off these hardy (cold-tolerant) plants in cells or pots to be transplanted later. If you have space, sow the seeds directly into the ground, then thin out. Brassicas can be targeted by cabbage root fly and cabbage white butterflies. See for controls. I’ve left out cauliflower as it takes up a lot of space and can be tricky to grow, so maybe try it once you’ve built up some confidence.
