Salad greens are expensive to buy considering how much can be grown from a single seed packet. Treat them, and the other leafy vegetables below, as cut-and-come-again crops by taking a few leaves at a time. Fresh leaves will soon appear.

You can grow all of the salad greens and leaf crops mentioned here in containers. Fill a container with compost, sprinkle the seeds over the surface, and cover with another layer of compost (about ½in/1cm). Keep well watered, and pick the largest leaves as you need them, allowing the smaller leaves to develop.
