In this large group of flowering plants, the three key edible ones to focus on are garlic, leeks, and onions. You do need a little patience to grow leeks, but onions and garlic couldn’t be more straightforward.

Alliums don’t require huge quantities of nutrients and prefer light soil. Grow them in beds mulched with a 2in (5cm) layer of compost each year or in large containers filled with growing mix and compost.
