To implement the right partitioning strategy for your needs, it is essential to understand how Cosmos DB does partitioning internally. In its usual sense, a partition may or may not exist. Physical and logical is how we have separated the two types of partitions. Out of all the partition key values we have in our dataset, Cosmos DB decides when we need a physical partition and moves an appropriate set of logical partitions to a separated physical partition when required.
