Oil Sands
The category Oil Sands is a subset of the much larger subject area Oil (which precedes it in this text). The term refers to formations of loose sand grains or partially solid sandstone coated by water and clay, with bitumen, an especially heavy and viscous form of crude oil, filling the intervening spaces. The bitumen can be extracted and processed to produce an unconventional form of oil (so called to distinguish it from oil produced by the conventional method of well drilling). Alternate terms for oil sands are tar sands, and more technically, bituminous sands.
