20.3.2 Visualization Requirements
Important goals of the visualizati on of protein-protein interaction networks are the under-
standing of the overall structure of the interactions, the i nteractions between two proteins,
and the functions of proteins by investigating the f un ct ions of their neighbors or of all
proteins within a cluster the protein belongs to. These networks are inherently complex:
large, n on-p lanar with many edge crossings, many separate components, and nodes of a
