Observational Measurements

There is no substitute for direct observation of the family process. Typically, observational measurements give the family a verbal or nonverbal task and then the observer (clinically, the therapist) rates the behaviors. How structured does this observation need to be? Can the interview be refined into a better diagnostic tool? Can a structured series of tasks provide insight to the therapist and her clients so that the pattern of interaction between the spouses might be improved?
