RF MEMS antennas for wireless applications

D. Rodrigo, L. Jofre and J. Romeu,     Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Spain

Abstract:

Radio frequency microelectromechanical systems (RF MEMS) is an enabling technology for a new generation of intelligent antennas capable of dynamically self-adapting their properties and providing an improved performance. This chapter analyses the different reconfiguration techniques, covering external approaches based on tunable feeding networks, and internal approaches which modify the antenna radiation mechanism. The chapter also describes the main applications of RF MEMS antennas, technological perspectives, design considerations and future trends.
