21 The Economy of the Western Mediterranean in the Archaic Period

It is my aim in this chapter to explore the economy of the human communities that inhabited the fringes of the western Mediterranean throughout the Iron Age (ca. 1000–ca. 400 BC). During that period, transformations within local societies and increased Mediterranean-wide connectivity triggered dramatic societal changes across a broad spectrum, including local patterns of production, distribution and consumption.
