Rhetorisches Philosophieren

Abstract: The handbook Rhetoric and Philosophy explores the complex relation between these two disciplines from a historical and systematic perspective. We propose a conception of rhetorical philosophizing that repeats and reflects in philosophy the very opposition between philosophy and rhetoric by which philosophy is constituted in the first place. Thus the role of rhetoric within philosophy becomes a role of critique. Rhetoric confronts the philosophical claim to rational discourse and valid knowledge with the contingency and particularity of philosophical languages, speaker positions and means of presentation.
