Abstract: The article discusses continuities between classical rhetoric, American pragmatism, and Pragmatics. All three are based on the primacy of practice over theory and criticize absoluteness claims of reason raised by rationalist philosophers. In particular, there is a close affinity between the rhetorical concept of speech and Peirce’s semiotics, which can be read as a complex theory of the efficiency and agency of signs.
