Abstract: From Plato over Kant up to the logical empiricists, philosophy stands in a critical relation to rhetoric, allegedly not oriented towards truth but rather towards persuasion. In contrast to this understanding of rhetoric, these philosophers try to establish context-independent criteria for logical argumentation.
